Menlancholia

Concept Description

Melancholia Vol.01

This project is greatly inspired by the movie Melancholia by Lars Von Trier, which depicted the reaction of two sisters when facing an apocalypse. The younger sister, who is suffering from depression, was able to calmly face the end of the world and accept the death. I was fascinated by the idea that ‘depression is a gift’ for us to be able to embrace everything because we are so incredibly weak.

I was later inspired by and related the paintings of John Everett Millais to the mood of the movie, especially the eyes of Ophelia, the accepted desperation. I also did research in ancient diving suits and asylum costumes because of the idea of ‘drowning’ and ‘restrain’ extracted from the main concept.

As a result, the outcome of this project is a combination of multiple aesthetic ideas tied together with one conceptual philosophy, melancholia.
